Records Fall as Cardozo Dominates the 2017 NYC Mayor’s Cup Cross Country Championships

Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx, New York – Benjamin Cardozo Sophomore Sophia Muccini, the 2016 NYC Mayor’s Cup Cross Country champion, notched another Best In The City performance dominating the field at the 2017 NYC Mayor’s Cup. Her time of 15:09.6 was a full fifteen seconds ahead of runner up Aziza Chigatayeva (Brooklyn Tech), and set a new Mayor’s Cup record topping the previous 15:10.10 mark set by Bishop Kearney’s Lisa Farjado in 2014. The Cardozo girls’ team placed four runners in the top ten dominating the competition with a team average of 16:12.26, which decimated the previous record team average of 16:21.23 set by Notre Dame Academy in 2015. Cardozo’s 40 team points was also a new Mayor’s Cup mark topping the previous record of 43 points (Brearly 2009 & Notre Dame 2015). Brooklyn Tech finished second in the team race with 87 points and a 17:10.04 team average. Convent of the Sacred Heart was the top finishing NYSAIS team and 3rd overall with 98 points and a 17:20.04 team average. St. Joseph Hill was the top finishing CHSAA girl’s team.
The Boy’s Championship race was a tighter affair. St. Peter’s Ryan Tierney won the individual championship with a time of 13:07.0, three seconds ahead of silver medalist Evan Sherman of Brooklyn Tech. A single point separated the top two teams. Brooklyn Tech had the faster average time (13:52.62) but Susan Wagner had the better placement spread and edged out Tech 89 points to 90 points to claim the team title. Trinity was the top placing NYSAIS team and 3rd overall with 98 points beating back the top CHSAA team St. Peter’s who finished 4th overall with 103 points.
